artist's book [livre d'artiste]:
An artistic work that can take shape only by borrowing from the distinctive characteristics of a book, in terms of the way it is assembled and manipulated, as well as its content and the reading process required. The artist's book may be published in one or more copies. The book is not the reproduction of a work of art; it is a work of art in itself.
Definition der Library and Archives Canada |
"Das Künstlerbuch ist kein Kunstbuch.
Das Künstlerbuch ist kein Buch über Kunst.
Das Künstlerbuch ist ein Kunstwerk".
Guy Schraenen |

What are Artists' Books?
Definitions: Artists' books is the broad term used to describe books, unique or multiple, that have been made or conceived by artists. There are fine artists who make books and book artists who produce work exclusively in that medium, as well as illustrators, -> weiterlesen

A book which can not be read can only has value as a booksculpture. Let us name it like this. As other arts booksculptures can give one an experience. Bookart will I define as a book you can open and see innside what it contains.

Christian Boltanski im Gespräch mit Hans Ulrich Obrist
über Point d'ironie:
..... Christian Boltanski
I believe at first it was linked to the idea of the artists’ book, because
artists’ books have undergone changes over time. There was a time when these
were extremely precious; you had to wear white gloves to handle them, they were
very expensive. That was the first stage. The second stage was born with Ed Ruscha
or Hans-Peter Feldmann, when artists’ books became cheap and infinitely
reproductible, but were in fact printed in 200 to 800 copies. I’ve worked
a lot within these books. Point d’ironie could have been, in practice, a
series of artists’ books in 100 or 300 copies. But there came a time when
we wanted to go beyond that to reach a greater number. It’s simply a question
of economy of distribution. Today I think the Internet might replace point d’ironie,
because with the Internet one can reach an even greater number of people. But
point d’ironie achieved something important at a specific time, which was
to go from 800 to 100,000 copies.

| What Is an Artist's Book?
"Artist's
books" don't look like most volumes found in a library. They are art objects
in the form of books. As with painting or sculpture, much of the "story"
in these books is visual. An idea may be illustrated in the book's shape or binding,
in the materials used, or in the artist's choice of images. Words may be used
to reinforce a message, but they are not always essential to the book's meaning.
Book artists often design, typeset, illustrate, print, and bind their own work,
or at least supervise all these stages of production. Instead of paper, an artist
may use clay, metal, or other materials. Artist's books, recognizable yet new,
can challenge us to explore innovative ways of seeing, learning, and understanding.
